“Insights Help Free The Mind of all Limits and Barriers” by Steve Lin

“As long as sentient beings don’t truly understand these six interior sense fields’ gratification, drawback, and escape for what they are, they haven’t escaped from this world—with its gods, Māras, and Brahmās, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans—and they don’t live detached, liberated, with a mind free of limits.

But when sentient beings truly understand these six interior sense fields’ gratification, drawback, and escape for what they are, they’ve escaped from this world—with its gods, Māras, and Brahmās, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans—and they live detached, liberated, with a mind free of limits.”

📜 THREE INSIGHTS FROM THE SUTTA

📌 The Mind is filled with barriers, limits, and disillusions due to gratification and pleasures.“If there were no gratification in the ear … nose … tongue … body … mind, sentient beings wouldn’t love it. But because there is gratification in the mind, sentient beings do love it.”

📌 The Mind can be released from these barriers and limits.“If there were no escape from the mind, sentient beings wouldn’t escape from it. But because there is an escape from the mind, sentient beings do escape from it.”

📌 Insights gained from study of the scriptures and meditation is the means to train the mind to clearly understand and become liberated.“But when sentient beings truly understand these six interior sense fields’ gratification, drawback, and escape for what they are, they’ve escaped from this world—with its gods, Māras, and Brahmās, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans—and they live detached, liberated, with a mind free of limits.”

😌 MEDITATION TIPS

📌 Observe the gratification and pleasures of the six senses throughout the day to learn about craving and 6 sense desires.

📌 Observe the drawbacks of these gratifications and their influence on attachment and disillusionment of the mind. See how the mind has barriers and limits due to gratification.

📌 Spend time in meditation contemplating gratification, drawbacks, and release of all sense pleasures that arise. It’s the “release” that removes the barriers and limits of the mind.

🙏 PREPARATION FOR GUIDED MEDITATION

🧘🏽‍♀‍ MEDITATION PLACE

📌 Find a comfortable place that is quiet to sit and meditate with few interruptions and distractions to the senses

.🧘🏽‍♀‍ RELAX

📌 After sitting comfortably on a cushion or pillow or floor, place hands in lap and close the eyes.

🧘🏽‍♀‍ TRIPLE GEM (1-2 min)

📌 Prepare the mind and concentration by taking “Refuge in the Triple Gem”.

📌 Visualize each one in the mind (as an object) and generate faith and warm feelings with each one. Don’t rush this.

📌 I take refuge in The Buddha.

📌 I take refuge in The Dhamma.

📌 I take refuge in The Sangha.

🧘🏽‍♀‍ SATIPATTHĀNA WARM UP (3-5 min)

📌 “The Breath”

📌 Begin to focus in the breathing without attaching or stressing about it. Just relax and observe the breath.

📌 As you breath in… observe it and release.

📌 As you breath out… observe it and release.

📌 Observing the rhythm of the breath is essential to relax the body and to practice releasing.

📌 Use the out breath to practice releasing.

📌 Relaxed smiling is good to use to help relax.

📌 I often will use the phrase “Peace” (in breath)

📌 “Release” (our breath)

📌 Continue observing breathing until it becomes very subtle or almost unnoticeable.

🧘🏽‍♀‍ SATIPATTHĀNA WARM UP (3-5 min)

📌 “The Body”

📌 As the breath fades, the mind relaxes, the body also begins to relax.

📌 Observe the body as a (body) form. It’s not self, but only a shell, a rupa, that temporarily supports consciousness.

📌 As observing, the body, let the breath and body fade.🧘🏽‍♂‍ SATIPATTHĀNA WARM UP (3-5 min)

📌 “The Mind”

📌 As the breath fades and the body relaxes, the mind tends to become active or stay busy.

📌 As thoughts arise, don’t engage with them. Observe them and then let them fade.

They will rise and they will fall unless there is engagement to feed the thoughts.

🧘🏽‍♂️ SELF-GUIDED MEDITATION

📌 Observe gratification of the eye.- things it likes to see- things that the makes contact with pleasure- things that trigger thought- things that cause feeling to arise after seeing

📌 Observe the results of the eye being gratified with seeing and contact with objects- observe the eye contact as it truly is- observe desire arise- observe craving arise- observe obsession arise- observe limits of mind arise- observe the barriers of mind

📌 Release the arising gratification of the eye contact- observe the pleasure and understand the need to release it- see the pleasure as a barrier- release the pleasure as a barrier- observe freedom arise- observe barriers fade- observe limits fade- observe the mind become limitless and free.

“As you get more and more skilled, you find that you can carry the sense of being well-centered — having an awareness that fills the body, that feels at ease with the body, feels at ease with the breath — into all kinds of situations. Where in the past you felt threatened, nervous, or ill at ease, now you have a solid center. You’re grounded and you’re taking care of the mind’s need to feed.”~ Thanissaro Bhikkhu “Kindfulness” (Meditations6)
